Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is breastfeeding medicine?
This is a medical specialty that has been practiced for years by pediatricians, family medicine physicians, obstetricians, and other physicians working with nursing mothers but has finally become an official board-certified subspecialty to ensure the most up-to-date and medically sound care is given to breastfeeding parents and their infants. The North American Board of Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine (NABBLM) certifies physicians who have met the educational, clinical training, and examination requirements to practice Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine. Dr. Schick was one of the first 103 physicians in North America to become certified with NABBLM in this newly formalized speciality. Until now, many physicians, like Dr. Schick, have pursued additional education, training, and experience from a personal interest and in an effort to better serve their patients. We are thankful the world of lactation and breastfeeding is receiving increased, and much needed, attention from the medical community.
Does Dr. Schick take insurance?
Dr. Schick does not participate in any insurance plans. She works directly with you to provide the best possible care without insurance-imposed limitations. However, federal law requires that health insurance companies cover breastfeeding services, including prenatal and postnatal consultation. A superbill is available after your visit upon request. This is a specialized receipt that you may submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please be aware that a superbill does not guarantee that an insurance company will pay for the services provided. You are encouraged to contact your insurance company directly with any questions.
Are visits eligible to be covered by HSA/FSA?
Yes, lactation consultation services and medical care are eligible expenses with a Healthcare Flexible Spending Account (FSA), Health Savings Account (HSA), or a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA). HSA and FSA cards are accepted for payment.
